Pet photography is a fun and profitable business that combines a love of animals with technical skill in photography.
Pet photographers take commissioned pictures of a person’s pet but it is important to bear in mind that this work can be messy and frustrating at times.
A love of animals and patience are essential as your pet subject may take time to settle down after running and jumping all over the place.
Focus your marketing in areas that are pet friendly.
You will need a good camera with prime lenses that autofocus, and high speed memory cards – a good photograph is acquired in less than a second!
Learn how to use your photographic equipment automatically as timing is critical when photographing animals.
Safety for both you and the animal is crucial: attend some basic dog handling courses, as well as reading up on different breeds and their personalities. Learn the body language of cat. You need to be confident when dealing with any kind of animal.
Volunteer at an animal shelter to get to know more about animal behaviour.
Always talk to the owner BEFORE you start shooting. Find out as much as you can about their pet. That way, if certain things terrify or stress them, you know what to avoid. Always check for food allergies before offering treats!
