House sitting is the practice where people leave their house for a period of time and entrusts it to a house sitter, who is permitted to live in the house for free accommodation and utilities, as well as some income, in exchange for assuming any combination of responsibilities.

Responsibilities over and above looking after basic housecleaning duties and keeping the house in good order may include caring for and feeding pets, maintaining the garden and collecting mail.

House sitting stays may vary from overnight to a few weeks depending on the owner’s requirements.

It is wise to have a written agreement of what is expected of you to ensure that your duties are clearly defined and you are aware of what the house owner provides for you.

House owners need to trust you with their home and pets, expect you to arrive and leave as discussed, as well as keeping their house clean and tidy.

In turn, you as the house sitter need to be given honest information of your duties, be provided with comfortable living space, and be given all relevant information about their pet needs, alarm systems, WiFi etc.
