Pet sitting is defined as the act of caring for a pet in its own home while the owner is away and for this reason trust is of paramount importance.

Pets are generally happier in their home environment where their daily routines are uninterrupted.

Loving pets is the main requirement for being a pet sitter, and having experience with your own pets will work in your favour, as will not having a fear of animals, especially dogs.

It takes a lot of hard work and dedication but it is worth it if you enjoy looking after animals. You may have clients that need you while they are at work during the week, out with friends in the evenings, away from home during the weekends and holidays and sometimes house-bound due to an illness.

Pet sitters supervise cats, dogs, and other pets while their owners are away, providing food and water, grooming, taking pets to vet appointments, taking dogs out for a walk, providing companionship and administering medicine when necessary.

You need to have good communication skills in order to find clients and understand their expectations, be empathetic, patient, reliable and trustworthy, and physically fit.

You may only have to go in once or twice a day, sometimes staying overnight.

Your tasks will include feeding the pets and changing the water bowls, playing and exercising especially with dogs, cleaning out cat litter boxes and other pet messes, medicating if necessary and giving loads of tender loving care.
