IN THIS LESSON

A buffer for your field.

This involves the permanent placing of plants in strips of land between fields, usually a type of grass, legume or alfalfa (Lucerne). Trees and shrubs are sometimes used. Common types of conservation buffers are as follows:

  • Field borders – permanent vegetation planted in strips at the edge of fields.

  • Filter strips – strips of grass or vegetation planted to slow down runoff from a field. Filter strips also act as field borders.

  • Grassed waterways – strips of grass planted in parts of fields where water naturally collects, i.e. low-lying parts.
