IN THIS LESSON

Soil loss due to action of water.

This type of erosion can take place when raindrops strike bare soil, or through flooding.

  • Sheet erosion usually happens first. In this type of erosion, water removes the soil in thin layers from sloping land, particularly when the soil is loose.

  • Rill erosion refers to soil being removed from the surface by small streams that run through land with poor surface drainage. Rills are usually found between crop rows.

  • Gully erosion is an advanced stage of rill erosion in which larger streams remove large amounts of topsoil, forming gullies.
